Reluctant Readers:
This section is specifically for Reluctant Readers. Reluctant Readers are those kids that say they do not like to read. This always breaks my heart and so I try to look for books that might especially appeal to these students. One thing these kids have in common with each other is they all like graphic novels and they like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. So, please take note that I have a whole other section for Graphic Novels. If your child is a Reluctant Reader please visit that page also.
I think one of the reasons the kids like the series Diary of a Wimpy Kid so much (besides it being super funny) is that it has little drawings and pictures in the side margins to support them while they read. Many of the books I am suggesting here have that format—the little drawings. I will also be adding verse novel books. Verse novels do not have very many words on each page and they are easy to read.
I feel for you if you have a Reluctant Reader—these kids are tough. But please do not give up hope! There are many books your child will like, we just have to look a little harder and I’m here to help.
Now my plug for audio books: Reading can be a struggle for Reluctant Readers. It’s hard to follow and enjoy a story when you are trying so hard to figure out the words. To ease the pressure and to encourage a love for books and stories in general, please allow your reluctant reader to get an audio book to listen to once or twice a month. I know actual reading is important to improve their reading skills. But there are a great many reading skills learned from listening to others read too. For instance, increasing concentration skills, creating a picture in your mind, inflection of voice, etc. all aid comprehension skills and these skills can be gained by listening to others read. Audio books can be a positive experience for your Reluctant Reader and they’ll be less inclined to say they hate reading. When the pressure to read is overwhelming to your child, slip in an audio book! They’ll love it!
At our school, Lomax, students can check out audio books (as well as eBooks) through Sora and Axis 360 which they can access through their Classlink.
