Supernatural Society by Rex Ogle

The Hook:

Will moves with his mom from New York City to the middle of nowhere—a town called East Emerson—for a “fresh start” (that is what his mom calls it) after his parents' divorce. It is horrible. Will misses New York, his best friend, and his dad. But what makes it all worse is this town. Will sees monsters everywhere he turns. I know that sounds crazy, but he does. They are everywhere—the crossing guard is a fire breathing dragon, the librarian is half snake-half woman, his teacher is a mummy, and that is not all. No one else can see the monsters except for Ivy, his neighbor. She warns him not to tell anyone what he sees because she made that mistake years ago and now everyone thinks she is ultra-weird, and they do not want to be her friend.

But when Will’s beloved dog, Fritz, goes missing along with other kids’ pets, Will suspects the monsters had something to do with it. He will do everything in his power to get Fritz back. Will teams up with Ivy and her brother, Linus, and the three friends go on a quest to solve this mystery even if it means running around with vampires and an ancient evil that has been lurking in the town for years. Can they save the animals? Will they themselves survive? You will have to read the book to find out.

This book is in our library. It is also in Sora as an eBook and an audio book. It is not in AR yet.

My Thoughts and Recommendations (Careful! There Could Be Spoilers):

This is a fun, light-hearted scary/mystery/funny book. It is narrated by Adam Monster who is not a character in the story. But he jumps in every chapter or so to add humor and/or warnings to the other characters. There are also secret messages to decode which will be engaging for our readers.

The witch asks the children to be courageous and face their fears and insecurities. She also shows them the importance of friendship and the support of friends and family is a two-way street. This is an entertaining, playful book for kids in 4th-6th grade. 4.1 stars.
