Haven: A Small Cat’s Big Adventure by Megan Wagner Lloyd
The Hook:
Haven loves the warmth and love of being an indoor cat with her human, Ma Millie. Ma Millie saved her from the cold and lonely forest when she was just a kitten. But when Ma Millie grows so sick that she cannot take care of herself, Haven knows she must get help. That means going outside and braving the dark shadows of the forest. There she finds an unlikely ally—a fox—who decides to help Haven navigate the forest. Thank goodness because there are very real dangers like a bobcat who is on the hunt. Will Haven find help for Ma Millie in time? Or will the bobcat have her way and Haven and the fox become a tasty meal? You will have to read the book to find out.

My Thoughts and Recommendations (Careful! There Could Be Spoilers):
This is a sweet book that I recommend for grades 4th through 6th graders who like animals. I especially recommend this book to Reluctant Readers in 6th grade. It is only 129 pages, so it is not overwhelming. The plot moves at a steady pace with humor and adventure. The narrator shifts back and forth from various animal voices-Haven, the fox, bobcat, and the humorous cows Haven meets along the way. The change of perspectives adds to the story's enjoyment. Haven’s confidence grows as her world expands. She even teaches the fox something. His life has been all about surviving but because of this adventure with Haven, he learns that warmth and friendship can be added to his world too.
Tender-hearted adventure story! 4.4 stars.
