Wait Till Helen Comes by Margaret Downing Hahn
The Hook:
Molly and Michael’s mom just got remarried to a man named Dave. They like Dave all right, but they do not have a good relationship with Dave’s daughter—their new stepsister—seven-year-old Heather. Ever since their parents got married, Heather has made Molly and Michael’s life miserable. And their mom and Dave always take her side. Now their parents have moved them all to the country to live in a house that used to be a church. There is even a cemetery in the backyard. If that’s not bad enough, Heather starts talking to a ghost named Helen. She warns Molly and Michael that Helen is coming for them, and she is going to hurt them. Michael thinks Heather is just trying to manipulate and scare them. But Molly is not so sure. Heather talks at the gravesite every day and seems to know things about Helen that are plain spooky. Molly feels certain Heather is in danger, but every time she tries to help, Heather twists things around to get her into trouble. Surely, things cannot get any worse! But they do…. when Helen comes. My Thoughts and Recommendations (Careful! There Could Be Spoilers):
This is a fast-paced, chilling tale not for the faint of heart. I totally enjoyed this book. Even though it was written back in 1986 it is such a great scary book that kids who like this genre will not be able to put it down. 4.9 stars!
